Writing
the articles for this newsletter provided me with an enjoyable trip
down memory lane. While this month's theme is about outdoor living
spaces, I felt compelled to provide advice to parents buying a swing
set this spring.
It was fun remembering back to when we
installed our swing set, as our boys are grown and on their own. We
still have the large wooden mallet that Cedar Works provided to
assemble our kit. I have memories of the boys and the neighborhood kids
climbing, hanging and sometimes swinging. It reminded me how innocent
children are and how important creativity is for them.
My
favorite photo of Jason, my oldest, shows him at a playground steering
off into an imaginary world only he can see. We didn't have a steering
wheel at home but I don't think we missed it. A swing set, more than
anything, serves to define that space as belonging to the kids, to do
what kids do naturally.
My advice is to include your children in
planning their "kid's space" and don't be surprised if they don't want
the biggest swing set imaginable. You can have fun drawing out plans
that might also include some rocks, water and plants ...
You'll find some great articles about swing sets on our web site:
If you too are an empty nester, don't despair as we've got some great new articles for you. We've added a List of Electricians to our web site, like the My Handyman List of Plumbers
added last month. We understand how valuable your time is, and hope
that by sharing these resources with you, we can save you time to enjoy
the great weather that's at our doorsteps.
Speaking about the great weather we've having, why don't you read Creating Outdoor Living Spaces
which offers lots of ideas for spending more time outdoors this summer.
Once you've got your backyard set for great meals and entertainment and
a special kid's space, you'll want to create a Pet Friendly Yard for your 4 legged friends who love being outside.
To help everyone reduce their home energy consumption, I've written an article on how to Go Green and $ave $$.
Some of the ideas are easy like using the new compact fluorescent light
bulbs (CFLs). They last 8 to 12 times longer (fewer trips to the store)
and save at least $30 over the lifetime of the bulb. To help you sort
through the various types of bulbs you might need to buy: We're
planning to revamp the My Handyman library to make it easier for you to
refer back to articles year to year. If you've got any ideas for
content we don't have yet, we would love to hear from you. Articles
are written to address common projects and questions, i.e. this weeks
common request appears to be railings.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
